Parent # 3

Another parent paid me a visit in school this Monday (July 28th ) after I sent her a text message the night before her visit.

Last Sunday, I checked my list of students to update the LIS or Learner Information System. It is a system of maintaining the records of each learner. In my list, I still had a lot of students whose names had not been entered yet,
because I still hadn't seen them attending my class and the other teachers' classes as well. I'd like to make sure if these students still have plans to attend the class before encoding their names in the LIS to avoid problems in the future. First, I opened my students' directory. Then, I made some templates of messages that I would like to send the parents for faster transactions. Afterwards, using Chikka.com, I sent them to the concerned parents of my students. Sad to say, only one parent replied to my text with:

"K po mam maraming salamat mam.at cenxa na dn po ku sa anak k mam" (verbatim).

Then I asked the parent about the schedule of his/her son, to which he/she replied (in verbatim):

"Twing wed po pasok nya mam 9am-5am (instead of PM) po. knausap k cxa mam nhya dw po cya..pero mam kng papasok po cya ngum wed po.tanggap pa po ba cya mam.cenxa npo ku m".

It's unbelievable that a parent would send a text message as jejemon as this. Unacceptable as it is, many people still like this way of sending text messages because it is short enough to convey your thoughts in one send.

I advised the parent to see me the next morning to talk about his/her son.

Then this Monday,  the student's mother came together with her daughter. According to her, her son said that his schedule is from 9 AM-5 PM. I asked her whether her son is a regular OHSP student or an irregular one (students who still have some subjects in other grade level) but she said her son has been a regular OHSP student. Hence, I showed her the schedule of Grade 9-OHSP and explained that if her son belongs to 9-OHSP without any back subjects, then why is he not attending my class? To back my statement up, I checked the student's card and there was no back subjects written. I also showed her the records of my activities where there were no activities reflected on her son's name. Finally, she said, that when she asked her son about who his class adviser is, he mentioned Mr Allan B (Not his real name). I said, that was a clear evidence that her son has not been attending our classes. There.

So, I asked her if she knows what time her son goes home everyday and if she regularly monitors her son's progress in school. She said she couldn't do it anymore because she spends most of her time at the market selling some goods.

Having heard of this, I've had mixed emotions: Anger towards the student for fooling his parents, annoyance towards the parent because, why would you have a child if you couldn't take care of him/her? Sympathy towards the parent because working at the market to make their own ends met isn't easy, and the same feeling towards the student, because it seems he is not thinking about what his future might become.

I advised her not to worry because DepEd allows teachers to make interventions to resolve this problem; she just needs to monitor her son and to make sure that he would attend the class by Wednesday.

To be continued.
